Make Your Own Pocahontas Costume

Pocahontas was famous long before the Disney movie of the same name, but it was her Disney stardom that made her outfit become one of the most popular outfits for costume parties. This outfit can be worn by both children and adults and can be customized to become a sexy, naughty outfit.

The outfit worn in the movie is made of material that looks like leather or suede and can be purchased from costume stores and specialty shops. However, if you are on a budget and you prefer to make an inexpensive costume, here’s what you should do:

Things you will need:

  • Oversized white cotton t-shirt
  • Tea bags
  • Beads in various colors
  • Additional fabric with color
  • Scissors
  • Indian wig

Step 1: In order to create the look that Pocahontas' dress has, you have to stain the white shirt to achieve the brownish appearance of a suede dress. Soaking the shirt in tea and water will accomplish this.

Keep in mind that an old t-shirt will work just fine and you don't have to buy a new one. Choose a plain white shirt, with no prints of any kind.

Boil four to five cups of water in a pot. Make sure that the pot is big enough for the t-shirt to soak in. After boiling, soak four to five tea bags in the water and let them stay there for several minutes. Wait until the water turns deep brown. Remove the tea bags afterwards.

Step 2: Soak the t-shirt in the pot. Make sure the all parts of the shirt are submerged in the water. Move the shirt around every few minutes to make sure that the staining will be even.

Step 3: How long you will soak the fabric depends on how dark you want your costume to be.  If you want it to be as brown as possible, let the shirt soak overnight.

Step 4: Remove the shirt from the pot and rinse with cool water. Wring out gently.

Step 5: Make the color stay permanently on the shirt by putting the fabric in the dryer on the high setting. Hang the dress afterwards and let dry thoroughly.

Step 6:  Now it is time to customize the dress. Create fringe by cutting strips on the hem of the t-shirt using a pair of scissors. Go all the way around the hem, making sure you cut strips in varying length and width. Decide on how far into the t-shirt you would like to cut the strips.

Step 7: After this is done, it is time to adorn the dress with beads. For this, you will need beads with holes in the center where the strip can slide through. Slide some of the beads into each strip and tie it into a knot to keep the beads in place. After you're done putting beads on the hemline, do the same to the hem of the sleeves.

Step 8: Cut the additional fabric into desired width to make into a belt. Make the fabric look frayed by snipping along each side of the cloth.

Step 9: Complete the outfit with a pair of brown, flat leather sandals.
