Make Your Own Mystique Costume

A Mystique costume is no doubt one of the most challenging costumes to create. The slick and mysteriously sexy villain from X-Men has blue colored skin all over her body, including the face, which is a hassle to recreate. The shape-shifting Mystique walks around without a stitch of clothing on, which means that if you are thinking of going as her to the party, you have to look as naked as possible. Pulling this off will require a lot of patience and creativity.

Things you will need:

  • A blue unitard
  • Yellow contact lenses
  • Blue face paint
  • Blue liquid latex
  • Blue craft foam
  • Red wig or red hair dye
  • Blue knee high socks
  • Regular socks
  • Flip flops

Step 1: Work on your hair before anything else, because once you start to work on your body, your hands will be filled be blue paint and latex. Mystique has deep red hair, so if you are a natural redhead, all you have to do is slick your hair back with gel. If you have a different hair color, invest on a red wig.

Step 2: Mystique has yellow, cat-like eyes, which you can get by putting on yellow contacts.

Step 3:  Mystique does not wear any clothes at all, so unless you are willing to go to the party buck naked with only blue latex as covering, you have to find a way to look naked without actually being naked. The easy solution? Wear a blue unitard. Make sure that it is very skin-tight and matches the exact blue of Mystique’s skin. If you can’t find the exact shade, you can have it dyed or spray painted. Make sure the fabric can handle the paint.

Step 4: After putting on the unitard, you have to put blue latex on it to imitate the scales on Mystique’s body. Use bits of blue craft foam to form the scales. Distribute them evenly on your shoulders, chest, pelvis and thighs. Paint them over with blue latex so they will stick.

Step 5: Do the same for your face. First, put blue face paint all the way to your hairline. The bare skin that will not be covered by the blue unitard should be painted blue.  This includes your neck. Second, apply pieces of blue craft foam on your face and paint them over with blue latex. Put blue paint all over your hands when you’re done fixing your face.

Step 6: Mystique is barefooted, so this means you can’t put shoes on; it will destroy your outfit. The clever solution to this is to wear regular socks then slip on a pair a flip flops. Get a pair of thick, blue knee-high socks and wear this over the regular socks and the flip-flops. This way, you will appear barefoot but still have protection for your foot. Make sure that the knee-high socks will match the blue of your face and unitard. This is very essential to achieve that flawless, naked, blue-skinned look.

And don't forget, Star Costumes has tons of great superhero costumes if you want to go as someone else.
