Make Your Own Mermaid Costume

The mermaid is one of the most mysterious and fascinating sea creatures ever. Often described as a  beautiful siren that lures even the most cold-hearted of men, this mythical creature’s appearance has become one of the most popular costumes around.

It is not really hard to create a mermaid costume, although this tutorial requires one to prepare the costume immediately before going to the party.

Things you will need:

  • Colorful bra or bikini top
  • Hot glue
  • Seashells
  • Silk flowers
  • Shimmery blue or blue green fabric
  • Needle and thread
  • Face and body glitter
  • Long wig
  • Blue green eye makeup

Step 1: The top part of the costume should be easy enough to find. All you need is a bra or bikini top in eye-catching color. Make the top more striking by putting additional decorations all over it. You can use silk flowers and seashells, which you will glue on the fabric.

Step 2: For the fishtail, you will need several yards of shimmering fabric. Blue green fabric will work best for this purpose. Wrap the fabric around the lower part of your body, starting from just above the knees and going upwards.

The material should be wrapped around the legs as tight as possible. Overlap the fabric as you wrap your hips and waist. Twist the end of the fabric at the waist and tuck into your back.

Step 3: To create the end of the tail, get another piece of the shimmering fabric and do a basting stitch at the top. This will make the fabric gather. Sew this fabric to the bottom of the first material you did earlier. Attach above the knees by sewing using a basting stitch.

Step 4: Mermaids are usually green-eyed and have very long red hair, which matches the lovely shade of their eyes. If you happen to have long, red hair, all you need is to comb it straight and put flowers or seashell on the strands.

If you have a different hair color, you can dye your temporarily with red hair color. Another option is to rent a wig with the same shade.

If you don’t have green eyes, simply wear green contact lenses.

Step 5: Mermaids don't really wear makeup, but if you want to look extra lovely for your party, you can wear blue green eyeshadow to bring out the color of your peepers. Coat your lashes with generous amounts of black mascara then curl.

To make you look like as if you just stepped out of the sea, put some blue or green glitter on your face and body. Make sure that your application is even.

Step 6: Make the outfit look prettier by putting on accessories. You can wear Hawaiian lei around your neck or wear a necklace made of seashells. Wear matching earrings and bracelets if necessary.

You can use additional accessories, like a golden comb. According to legend, mermaids use gold comb for their hair. If you want to go all out, borrow a harp and bring it with you to the party.
