If you are a huge Harry Potter fan and you happen to be
female, why not try dressing up as pretty whiz kid Hermione Granger? The
over-achieving, elf-loving Hermione has become one of the most popular
characters among the young and not-so-young, thanks to the success of the Harry
Potter movies. Making a Hermione Granger costume is not difficult at all. You
can actually buy a set of Harry Potter costumes from any costume store, but if
you want to save and put together the outfit yourself, this is how you should
do it.
Things you will need:
- Maroon and gold scarf
- Maroon and gold tie
- White shirt with collar
-
Harry
Potter Gryffindor robe
- Blow dryer
- Styling mousse
- V-neck sweater
- Knee-length schoolgirl
skirt
-
Knee-high
socks
- Mary Jane shoes
- Gold or maroon fabric pen
- Books
Step 1: Shop
around for a maroon and gold scarf and neck tie. If you can’t find any, you can
improvise by getting a plain colored scarf in either gold or maroon and simply
draw the contrasting lines to it. If you have a gold scarf, use maroon paint to
draw the lines and vice versa. Do the same with the tie. Make sure that you
draw very straight lines (it helps to use tape to mask areas) so the finished
product will look natural.
Step 2: Assemble
a standard preppy schoolgirl uniform. In this case, you will need a white shirt
with collar, v-neck sweater, knee-length schoolgirl skirt, knee-high socks and
a pair of Mary Janes. Coordinate them according to the colors of Gryffindor,
the house where Hermione, Harry and Ron Weasley belong. A maroon vest and a
gray skirt will do just fine, complete with black Mary Janes.
Step 3: The black
Gryffindor robe is an essential part of the Hermione Granger costume. You can
easily buy this from a costume store, but if you're looking for a cheaper
substitute, you can just buy black fabric and make the robe yourself. Just
download a sewing pattern for a Hogwarts house robe, draw the pattern on your
fabric, cut, then sew. This should be easy enough and can be done even by
novice sewers.
Step 4: To make
your Gryffindor robe look authentic, you can put a Gryffindor patch on the
chest. This you have to buy at a costume store, but this should not set your
budget back much, especially with the money that you are saving creating a
homemade robe.
Step 5: After you
acquire and put on the clothes, you must work on your hair. Hermione originally
has bushy and untamed light brown hair. If you happen to have brown hair, all
you have to do is blow dry your hair while it is still wet. Hang your head
upside down. Scrunch your hair while blow drying. Put mousse on your hair to
make the scrunches hold. Your hair will have a semi-afro look once you stand up
straight.
Step 6:
Accessorize. Carry a book or two at the party to get that nerdy Hermione look.
Walk around with a snooty expression on your face.
