Harley
Quinn has one of the most striking costumes in the comic book universe. Harley,
who is one of The Joker’s closest allies, wears a small mask, visually
appealing red and black body suit, and a traditional jester hat. The red and
black patterned body suit may look difficult to make, but you can actually do
this if you have basic knowledge in using the sewing machine.
Things
you will need:
- A black,
long-sleeved top made of stretchy fabric
- A red,
long-sleeved top made of stretchy fabric
- A pair of red
leggings, preferably made of Lycra
- A pair of
black leggings
- Red and black
cotton thread
- Fabric pen or
chalk
- White cloth
- White pompoms
- Scissors,
sewing machine
- Red gloves
- Black gloves
- White bangles
- Black domino mask
- Patterns for
the costume
- Black boots
Step 1: First thing that
you should do is to download a sewing pattern for the outfit, along with a
close-up picture of Harley Quinn in her costume so you will have a solid guide
on how to create the outfit.
Step 2: The basic idea
for Harley’s body suit is that you have to combine one half of the black top
and one half of the red top to form a red and black whole. Your sewing pattern
will guide you on how to do this properly, so that the cut is perfect and the
top part will look even. The top should have like a cross at the center, with
alternating black and red parts. Think of a rugby shirt to get the idea.
Step 3: Do the same for
the red long-sleeved top. Harley’s top left and bottom right parts are the ones
covered in the black, and the top right and bottom left are the ones covered in
red.
Step 4: Get the red
leggings and the black leggings, and then cut each of them in half. Sew the two
pieces together. Take note to follow the proper pattern; the red bottom should be
under the black top and the black bottom should be under the red top. Sew the
top and bottom together afterwards to form a one-piece body suit.
Step 5: Harley Quinn's
costume has diamond-shaped patches on her sleeve and thighs. Red patches should
be on the black sleeve and pants leg and black patches should be on red sleeve
and pants leg. From the scrap material
from the pants and top, trace diamond shapes about 2 ½ to 3 inches wide,
depending on the size of your costume. Cut the shapes and sew them on the top
and pants. Refer to the picture to make sure you put the diamonds in the right
places.
Step 6: For the collar,
just trace the pattern to a piece of white cloth, cut out then sew on the
collar of the top.
Step 7: Harley's jester
hat is easy to make if you have a pattern for it. You can download this from
the internet, or use a picture of any traditional jester hat as a model. You
can use the leftover red and black material you used for the body suit. Put
pompoms at the cone-shaped ends of the hat.
Step 8: Get two white
wide bangles to put on each wrist. Wear
a red glove on your right hand and a black one on your left hand. Put white
face paint on your face then wear the domino mask. Complete the outfit with
pointy, high-cut boots.
