If you want to wear a costume that does not fail to attract
attention every time, then bring out your naughty side and don a French Maid
costume. A staple in costume parties both wholesome and nasty, a French maid
costume will definitely bring all eyes on you and then some.
French maid costumes are so popular that no costume store are
complete without one. If you want to put together your own French maid outfit
instead of buying one from the store (and saving you cash in the process),
here’s what you should do:
Things you will need:
- Short black skirt
- White petticoat or white
net fabric
- Black corset top or
bustier
- Elastic
- Needle and thread
- Black and white
lace/ruffles
- White apron
- White boyleg panties
- White fabric
- Velcro
- White buttons
- Bobby pins
- Black fishnet stockings
- Black stiletto heels
Step 1: Instead
of buying a maid’s costume, you will go DYI with the costume by creating the
pieces yourself. First piece is the short black shirt, which should not go past
the middle of your thighs. You must show as much leg as possible. If the skirt
you have is too long for this, you can simply cut it and sew the edges for a
seamless look.
Step 2: The next
piece is a white petticoat that you will wear under the black skirt. If you
don’t have a petticoat, you can use a ballerina tutu. Another alternative is to
use heavy white net fabric to make a petticoat.
Get some elastic and cut it to fit your waist. Cut off two
inches from it. Now get the net fabric and cut two yards from it. Sew the elastic
along the top part of the net fabric. Make sure to stretch the elastic as you
attach it to the netting. This is needed in order for the petticoat to gather
at your waist.
Step 3: Sew the
two ends of the petticoat together. Make sure that the petticoat will peek out
under the short black skirt. You may have to shorten the petticoat for this.
Only an inch or two should peek out from underneath.
Step 4: Now get
your bustier or corset top. You can easily get one from any lingerie store, and
you don’t have to buy an expensive one. Preferably, the shade of the corset
should match the shade of the black skirt. Make the corset frilly by sewing
lace or white ruffles around the top. Attach the same lace/ruffles to the white
apron and the back of the white boyleg panties.
Step 5: Create a
maid’s hat by cutting 12-inches of white fabric and sewing lace/ruffles on it.
Sew a piece of elastic around the hat. The elastic should be about an inch
smaller than the length of the hat. Stretch the elastic while attaching it to
the hat. This will make it the hat gather, just like the skirt. You can easily
put the hat on your hair using bobby pins.
Step 6: Create
cuffs by cutting rectangles from the white fabric then sewing lace/ruffles
around the edges. Sew Velcro on the cuffs so you can close them easily. Put a
button on the cuffs for a prettier look.
Step 7: Complete
the outfit with black fishnet stockings and black stiletto heels.
