Make Your Own Dracula Costume

If creating complicated Halloween costumes is not your thing, you can take the easy route and stick to making classic outfits, such as a Dracula costume. Dracula is one of the most popular Halloween characters ever and making a costume of this classic vampire takes minimal effort. Some of the items you will need can be easily found in your closet. If you don’t have them, you can borrow some of the clothes from your Dad or even your grandfather.

Things you will need:

  • White shirt, preferably with long sleeves
  • Black pants
  • Waistcoat
  • Dress shoes
  • Black cummerbund
  • Red bow tie
  • Cape
  • White face paint
  • Fangs
  • Hair gel/hair spray

Step 1:  No Dracula costume is complete without a great, black cape. You can get this easily from any costume store. Get one with red satin lining. If you want to save money, you can improvise and make your own cape using an old black coat. Just cut off the sleeves then sew patches on the holes to cover them up.  Get a red cloth and sew on the inside of the cape. You can use a sewing machine for this but you can also just sew them by hand.

Step 2: There is no question that Dracula should look as dapper as possible. Luckily, you only need to wear a classic tuxedo outfit. Put on a long-sleeved white shirt and black pants. These should be perfectly pressed to make the look as elegant as possible. Add the waistcoat, black cummerbund and red bow tie. You can also use black bow tie, but a blood-red one is better. Then put on your perfectly polished dress shoes  and the cape.  Do not put on accessories such as watch and jewelry.

Step 3:  Now that you're dressed, it's time to do your face and hair. Dracula should look as ghoulish as possible, so white face paint is a must. You can use pale makeup foundation if you're allergic to face paint or if you're skin is very sensitive. Make the paleness more pronounced by putting grayish shadow under your eyes. A deathly pallor is a must with a Dracula costume. For the hair, put on gel in your hands and run them through your hair. Slick your hair back using a comb. Dracula must have dark hair, so if you're blond, you might consider coloring your hair black or brown using temporary dye. You can easily wash this off in the shower.

Step 4: Now add your fangs and the outfit is complete. You can buy vampire fangs from any costume store or you can order them online. Make sure you get the right size though. The last thing you want is your fangs to slip off your mouth every now and then when you're already at the Halloween party. You can dab some red paint or lipstick on the corners of your lips, which will give the appearance of blood coming out of your mouth.

Of course, if you'd rather skip all the work, you could also take a look at our large selection of vampire costumes, where you're sure to find something fang-tastic!
