Make Your Own Zorro Costume

Do you want a Halloween costume that will make you look handsome, dashing, and mysterious? Then try dressing up as Zorro. The costume for the Spanish swordsman is very easy to put together, since he wears an all black outfit. Zorro has been featured in books and movies, so getting the look right should not be a problem for you.

Things you will need:

Step 1: Start putting the outfit together by finding a black, long-sleeved shirt that will suit Zorro’s period. You can get a renaissance shirt, a peasant shirt, or a pirate shirt. All of these look appropriate for this period costume. If you can't find any in department stores, you can easily order one online.

Step 2: Match the shirt with black pants. Since this is a period costume, it goes without saying that black jeans are an absolute no-no. Plain, tight-fitting, black dress pants will do just fine.

Step 3:  The cape is an important part of Zorro's costume. It should be long enough and should hang down to the back of knees. If you don't have a black cape lying around the house, you can make one using black fabric. The cape should be tied around your neck with black ribbons.

If you're making the cape yourself, just sew the black ribbon across one end of the cape. Make sure it fits by tying the ribbons under the front collar of your shirt.

Step 4: The classic Zorro outfit has a red sash to be worn around the waist or across the chest. You can do this by using red fabric. However, if you want to maintain the streamlined, all-black look, you can opt for a black sash or black belt instead.

Step 5: Zorro's main weapon is his sword. Try looking among your father or grandfather's old stuff and see if they have an old sword hidden somewhere. It need not be sharp and functional, since you're not going to stab someone with it. If you don't have any swords in your house, you can just buy one from toy stores or costume shops. You should buy a sheath to go along with the sword. Make sure you get the old-fashioned type of sword that will go well with the period costume.

Step 6: Zorro would not be Zorro without the trademark mask. You can buy a simple black mask from a costume shop or you can create one by taking an old black bandanna and cut holes on it where you can see through.

Step 7: If you are going for the original Zorro look, you must sport a mustache. Try to grow one weeks before the party, or you can simply draw one on your bare upper lip using black eyeliner. A false mustache is also an option.

Step 7: Complete the look with black gloves, black boots and black hat. Riding a black horse is optional.

Don't forget, we also carry a Zorro costume, and you can even find a women's Zorro costume.
